Born in Boston on December 23, 1945, Walter was the son of the late Henry P. and Eva A. (Ford) Hayes. Graduating from Pentucket Regional High School, he subsequently attended Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass., where he received a degree in English Literature.
Walter was a teacher of English Literature, Grammar and Speech as well as the Chess Coach at Presque Isle High School in northern Maine in his early career before moving back to the area to marry and have a family, ultimately settling back into his childhood home on the Merrimack River.
Walter was an avid chess player, always remained well versed in literature, film, and current events, enjoyed collecting sports trading cards and was a true lover of nature spending countless wonderful hours throughout his life, boating, fishing, hiking, bird watching, and exploring the back roads of New England.
In addition to his wife Lisa of Merrimac, he also leaves behind his son, Jason Hayes, of Merrimac; his beloved dog, Casper; his sister, Ruth Hayes Schwartz of Tewksbury; his sister-in-law, Deborah Pike Cashman of Dalton, N.H.; and his brother-in-law, Harry E. Pike and wife Heather of Pittsfield, N.H.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick E. Golden and James E. Golden.
Visiting hours at Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac, will be held on Friday, February 15, 2019, from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial at Locust Grove Cemetery, Merrimac, will be held in the springtime. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the National Audubon Society.
