SALEM — Mr. James Spiros Demakis, age 97, of Salem, died Sunday evening, Feb. 10, 2019 with his family by his side.
Born in Haverhill, Jim was the son of the late Spiros and Pota Demakis. He attended Lynn schools, obtained a bachelor of science in Business Administration from Northeastern University and later obtained a Masters Degree in Education from Salem State University.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and proudly served his country during World War II. He was a member of the 825th Tank Destroyer Battalion and served in France, Belgium and Germany. He received the American and European Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
After the war, Jim worked within the Malden School System for 29 years. He taught industrial arts and later computers at both the middle and high schools. He was very committed to his teaching and always stated: “It’s what you can do for students that really matters.”
Post-retirement he enjoyed life daily by traveling, golfing, skiing, square dancing, gardening, walking and meditating.
He leaves a daughter, Diane Demakis of New Hampshire; his siblings, William Demakis of Swampscott, Elaine Grevelis of Danvers, Dorothy Pechilis of Lynn and Timothy Demakis of Topsfield. He was the loving uncle of many nieces and nephews. He leaves a longtime friend, Lynda Snow of Salem. Jim was predeceased by his former wife Gloria Demakis and a brother, Louis Demakis.
Service information: Visitation will be held on Friday morning from 9-11 a.m. at the MACKEY Funeral Home, 128 S. Main St., Route 114, Middleton.
