Rockport – James Edward "Jim" Waddell, 72, of Rockport, husband of Nancy (Downie) Waddell for 50 years, father of Melanie Waddell and grandfather of Aadan DeLeon Job, died on June 6, 2021 in his home, surrounded by his family, of lung cancer.
Jim was born in Gloucester, on September 26, 1948, the son of B. Chester Waddell and Nancy Burbank Carlson. He served in the United States Army with a tour of duty in Vietnam as a crew chief and door gunner aboard a Huey helicopter. He continued in a career of aviation earning a commercial pilot certificate and worked as an air traffic controller at the Boston En-route Air Traffic Control Center. After leaving air traffic in 1981 he worked as the local locksmith with his business, Waddell's Mobile Lockshop, and as a part-time commercial fisherman.
A believer in public service, Jim served on the Rockport Board of Assessors for 24 years. He was a member of the Pigeon Cove Boatowners Association, helped in securing Pigeon Cove Wharf, and was a founding member of the Rockport Green Community Task Force. However, his proudest endeavor was helping start Big Brother, Big Sister of Cape Ann. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars American Legion Post 98, the Disabled American Veterans, and the 71st Assault Helicopter Association.
Jim enjoyed being out on his boat, traveling the world, creating art with his kinetic copper wind sculpture and telling his many stories, one of which is when he met his spirit atop Rachelle's Knoll in Sedona, Ariz., who was a medicine man named Flying Eagle.
He was sadly predeceased by his son, Matthew James Waddell, and his brother William B. Waddell.
He leaves behind his sisters, Joan Smith and her husband, Don, Bonnie Graham and her husband, John, sister-in-law Sue Waddell and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, September 27, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Shalin Liu with refreshments and light fare.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Jim's memory to the educational fund of his grandson, for whom he had the highest of hopes and dreams. Aadan's Educational Fund, c/o Cape Ann Savings Bank, 109 Main St., Gloucester, MA 01930.
