Rockport – Max S. Levi, 99, of…

Rockport – Max S. Levi, 99, of Rockport, passed away peacefully in his hundredth year on October 22, after a very full and robust life, following a brief illness. Born in 1921 in Wuppertal, Germany, he lived through the rise of Nazism as a youth before settling in New York City.
Max shared those experiences many times with young people through the organization Facing History and Ourselves in his later life. He raised a family with Loretta Straus Levi and established a dental laboratory business in New York City for 25 years. He and Loretta moved to Rockport in 1972, while Max taught at the Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. He later had his own dental laboratory in Lynn, Massachusetts. Max found his true home in Rockport, which he shared for 35 years with Jane Meterparel. Max's contributions to the Rockport community were numerous and sustained; he served for many years on the Rockport Democratic Town Committee, was a founder of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival and more recently was a constant volunteer at NeedyMeds, a local non-profit organization that provides free information for people who can't afford medications and health care costs. After retiring, he was an antique dealer specializing in jewelry and precious metals. Max was an avid swimmer, a lover of music and he took great pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Meterparel; and children Jeff Levi (Bopper Deyton), Ray Levi (Ginny), Jon Meterparel (Heather), Lynne Meterparel Kenney (Dave); and grandchildren Mara Levi (Meredith Palmer), Dina Levi (Allie Robbins), Jordan, Libby, and Abe Kenny, Ben and Nick Meterparel, and great-grandchildren, Maggie, Caroline, Ezra, and Dasha. He was preceded in death by first wife, Loretta Straus Levi.
In keeping with his wishes, his services will be private. Memorial gifts may be made to Rockport Music, 16 Main Street, Rockport, MA 01966 or the U.S. Holocaust Museum, 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW Washington, DC 20024-2126.
