He was born in Gardner, Mass., on February 5, 1928, son of the late Roy and Gladys (Tuttle) Allen. He was a graduate of Stetson High School of Randolph, Mass., class of 1944, then proudly served in the United States Army during the WWII occupation of Germany. There he met and married Marianne Allen (Stiel). He later graduated from Harvard with a bachelor’s degree in Physics.
Richard worked as a research physicist for the Air Force Cambridge Research Labs. Using large radio telescopes, he probed high energy celestial objects and mapped the Earth’s ionosphere. This led to his development of mathematical corrections used on his work with the first GPS system and also radar identification of Russian missile launches.
In his earlier years, he was a Boy Scout troop leader to the young men of Essex. He also loved to cook, learned to bake artisanal breads and had a great passion for gardening. Saturday mornings were spent searching the forests of Essex for any kind of berries or crab-apples because he loved making jelly. A kind and generous man, after retirement he moved to Essex to help care for his grandchildren. He was a lifelong avid reader and supported both the T.O.H.P. Burnham and Essex Elementary School libraries. People were always happy that they had met him and looked forward to seeing him again.
Richard is survived by his former wife Marianne Allen and their three children; his son, Richard Allen and his wife Isabelle of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his daughter, Karen Allen and her husband Albert Spanfelner of Alameda, Calif.; Mark Allen and his wife Phyllis of Essex, Mass.; his grandchildren, Ruby Clay and husband Andrew, Carl Allen and fiancée Cassandra Benjamin, Felicia Allen, Paul Allen and wife Cinda, Teresa Winters and husband David, Amelia Smith and husband Brian, Julia Jutras and husband Chris, Amanda Robillard and husband Rikki, Cassandra Genser and husband Johnnie, Joseph Allen and Kristen Lunde; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also, his brother, Jack Kuehl of Templeton, Mass.; brother-in-law, Bob Callanan of Whitman, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his grandson, Richie Allen; sisters, Leona Callanan, Mary Smith and Helen Derby; brothers, William Allen and David Allen.
