Peabody – Mr. William S. Guptill, age 87, of Peabody, died Wednesday January 1, 2020 in Beverly Hosptial after a brief illness. He was the husband of Nancy M. (Roberts) Guptill, with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Lynn, he was the son of the late Walter R. and Vivian (Graves) Guptill. He had lived in Peabody for the past 46 years.
A proud Korean War Veteran, William retired from the United States Air Force in 1971 after 21 years of service. He had also worked as an engineer for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. He and his family were the owners of the former Guptill’s Luncheonette on Washington St. in Lynn. William was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Freemason and a member of the Shriners International, and he was also an antique car enthusiast.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, he is survived by his son, Bill Guptill and his wife Holly; his step-children, Edward Shawn Fitzsimons and his wife Karen, and Maureen Fitzsimons-King and her husband, Bob King; his brother, George Guptill; his sister, Ellen Brazell; as well as 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the step-father of the late Mary Chambers and brother of the late Walter R. Guptill, Jr, Shirley Burns, and Stephen Guptill. The family would like to thank the staff of the Masconomet Healthcare Center in Topsfield for the exceptional care given to William.
His funeral will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Solimine Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Rt 129), Lynn. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. Those who prefer may make donations to the Shriners Hosptial for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
