LYNN — Richard E. “Dick” Blodgett, age 87, of Lynn, died Tuesday after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was the husband of Sharon “Sherry” (Roffman) Blodgett, with whom he shared 29 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Walter Ray and Helen (Mason) Blodgett. He was raised in Lynn and lived in Peabody and Lynn for the greater part of his life. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Lynn and St. Michael’s College in Vermont.
Dick served in the United States Marine Corps from 1949-1951. He worked for the Massachusetts Environmental Police, Stolen Boat Division until his retirement. He also worked in the insurance industry; at Blodgett and Blodgett, Consoles and Blodgett, and Columbia Insurance. Dick was one of the founding members and past president of the International Association of Marine Investigators (IAMI). An avid golfer, he was a member of Gannon Golf Club, and had also worked as a bartender there. He also enjoyed woodworking.
In addition to his wife Sherry, Dick is survived by three children, Jonathan Blodgett and his wife Judy of Peabody, Maureen Kolhonen and her husband Edward of Peabody, and Timothy Blodgett and his wife Betsy of Gloucester; his former wife, Edith (Cunningham) Blodgett of Peabody; eight grandchildren, Jon, Ryan, Lauren, Tim, and Liam Blodgett, and Matt, Kevin and Maura Kolhonen; four great-grandchildren, Sophia, Sydney, Connor and Emilia Blodgett; as well as his half-sister, Ann Murphy and her husband Kevin of Barrington, R.I.
Service information: His funeral will be held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129), Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Sunday from 2-6 p.m. Burial will be private.
