Lynn – Arnold O. “Andy” Anderson, age 92, of Lynn, died Sunday in the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Lorraine R. (Mangano) Anderson. Born and raised in Swampscott, he was the son of the late Arthur O. and Christine (Peterson) Anderson. He had lived in Lynn since 1962.
Andy served in the United States Navy Seabees during WWII. He was stationed at Okinawa and lived through the great typhoon there. A ship’s cook, 3rd class, he learned of his love of cooking during his time in the Navy. He left Swampscott High School before graduation to enter the Navy, and did not receive a diploma because of his service, so he was the first WWII veteran in 2000 to be awarded his diploma from Swampscott High School.
Andy worked for General Electric in Lynn and Everett for over 40 years until his retirement in 1986. He was an avid gardener and in his younger years, he owned his own landscaping company, as well as being co-owner of a lobster boat. An outdoorsman, he was an avid bow and arrow hunter, and also enjoyed fishing and scuba diving.
He is survived by his daughters, Suzanne Maxwell of Peabody and Diane Anderson and her husband Mark Angelopoulos of Beverly; his granddaughter, Stephanie Maxwell of Peabody; his brother, Loring Anderson of Acton; his sisters, Alice Griest of Lynn and Helen Wallis of Calif.; his godson, Phil Ketchen of Vt.; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the father-in-law of the late Thomas Maxwell. He was also predeceased by his sister, Ella Anderson Norton.
His funeral will be held on Friday at 8 a.m. from the Solimine Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129), Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Lynn at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Those who prefer may make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
