Peter Edward Burns, of Swampscott, formerly a longtime resident of Lynn, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017, in the NSMC – Salem Hospital at the age of 81. Born in Lynn on November 21, 1935, he was the son of the late James “Red” Burns and Alice (Keon) Burns. Peter was raised and educated in Lynn, and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School with the class of 1953. He went on to attend Merrimack College, but soon joined the U.S. Army to help fight for our country during the Korean War. He served from January of 1954 until his honorable discharge in January of 1957. Peter had a 35 year career with the postal service, dedicating time in Boston, Lynn, and finally North Reading from where he retired. In his spare time, Peter was a member of the Postal Union, the American Legion, and the Franco American Club as well. He was an avid New England Sports fan and especially loved to root on Boston College and Notre Dame during their football seasons. Peter leaves his children, Kevin P. Burns and his wife, Jacqueline V. Moran of Naperville, Ill. and Kerri A. Burns of Stoneham; his granddaughters, Nicole and Rachel Burns; and his sister, Terese MacPherson and her husband, Bruce of Lynnfield; as well as several nieces, nephews, and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Peter was preceded in death by his sisters, M. Eileen Burns and Barbara Burns. Funeral from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. An hour of visitation will be held in the funeral home from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in Holy Family Church, 26 Bessom St., Lynn at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the veteran section of Swampscott Cemetery, Swampscott.
