May 12, 2017 Ruth M. (Brown) Desmond, 87, wife of the late John J. Desmond, Jr., died early Friday morning, May 12, 2017, in the Masconomet Healthcare Center in Topsfield after a long illness. Born in Ipswich, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Ruth D. (Hills) Brown. Mrs. Desmond was a lifelong resident of Ipswich and was a graduate of Ipswich High School. She was formerly employed at the Hayward Hosiery and later Sylvania, both of Ipswich. She would be a housekeeper for several families including the Durey-Cook and the Vivian Endicott families. She loved cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She was predeceased by her husband, John on September 23, 2006. Mrs. Desmond is survived by her six children and their spouses, Susan Jordan and Jeffrey, Patricia Nichols and Edward, John Desmond III and Patricia, Paul Desmond, Maureen Purdy and Mark, Theresa Desmond and partner, Eric Ball; eight grandchildren, John, Alicia, Christopher, Kerry and Cole Desmond, Dorothy and Adelia Purdy and Brielle Jordan. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret Bodge. Mrs. Desmond was also predeceased by her stillborn son, her daughter, Linda and her brother, Robert Brown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, May 19 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 54 Linebrook Road, Ipswich. Burial will follow in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich. Visiting hours will be Thursday, May 19 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Morris Funeral Home, 45 North Main Street, Ipswich.
