She was born in 1929 in Baltimore, MD, to the late Douglas and Madeleine (Hartley) Allen. She moved as a child to Chelmsford, MA and was raised by her uncle and aunt, the late Leroy and Catherine (Hartley) Dutton. She graduated from Chelmsford High School. She went on to graduate from Lawrence (MA) General Hospital School of Nursing in 1952.
