Lester K. Roberts died peacefully at the age of 82 on May 13, 2017, surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren after a long battle with lung cancer. Lester had a lot of different roles in his life. He was a sailor in the Navy as a young man, was married to the love of his life, Judith M. Roberts, who predeceased him this past November, for 60 years. He was also predeceased by his parents, Lester and Lillian Roberts; and grandson, John T. Roberts. He was a cosmetologist and salon owner in the Danvers and Middleton areas until the mid-1970s, until his interests took him to the Salem jail, where he started as a deputy sheriff, and was with the Essex County Sheriff’s Department for 34 years and retired as a Captain of the Lawrence Farm correctional facility. He was also part of the TLT construction crew for many years. He was a hardworking man for his family, a quiet man, an observer. He loved to read mystery novels, play cards, and was the world’s biggest Patriot's fan. But most importantly, he was a husband and father of seven children, Kenneth L. Roberts of Alton Bay, N.H., Scott Roberts and his wife, Annmarie of Salem, Lisa Roberts of Wakefield, Mass., Kathy Cormier and her husband, Michael of Wakefield, Mass., Brian Roberts and his wife, Brenda from Sandown, N.H., Cynthia Roberts and her husband, Richard of Amesbury, Mass., and Paul Roberts and his wife, Dawn from Kingston, N.H. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was known by all as Gumpy. His granddaughter, Nicole, took amazing care of him at the end of his journey. "I love you, a bushel and a peck." We will miss you, Gumpy. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in The DeVito Funeral Home, 1145 Mass Ave., Arlington and to a funeral service Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in The First Baptist Church, 8 Lafayette St., Wakefield.
